Security (XPIA)¶
The XPIA (cross-prompt injection attack) boundary wraps external-source text — Teams messages, email bodies, file contents, Work IQ content — in an <external_content> envelope before it reaches the model. Source: src/entrabot/security/xpia.py.
This module owns exactly one job: mark the boundary between trusted call-site metadata and untrusted body text. It is a provenance and escaping boundary, not a cryptographic authenticity guarantee, not a sanitizer, and not a guarantee that a model cannot be persuaded to follow instructions embedded in wrapped text. The body prompt is what instructs the model to treat envelope contents as data, not instructions; this module only makes the envelope itself tamper-resistant.

Wraps external-source content in the XPIA envelope:
body— the external-source text. Any Unicode string.source— provenance identifier. Required.sender— optional canonical identity of the content's author (UPN, email, or"unknown"). Omitted from the envelope entirely whenNone.received_at— optional timezone-awaredatetime, serialized with.isoformat(). Omitted entirely whenNone.
Returns the wrapped string, or body unchanged when the feature flag disables wrapping (see Feature flag below).
Authoritative outer envelope¶
Every call wraps the supplied body — unconditionally, even when body already looks like an <external_content> envelope. The call-site source / sender / received_at arguments are always what appears in the outer tag; external text cannot forge or override that metadata by embedding text that resembles a wrapper prefix. Envelope-shaped input becomes untrusted body text inside a new, trusted outer envelope — it does not get treated as an already-validated envelope.
Close-tag collision escaping¶
Any literal </external_content> inside body is escaped to </external_content> before wrapping, so embedded text cannot close the envelope early and inject sibling content that the model would read as being outside the boundary.
The match is case-insensitive and whitespace-tolerant on the tag: variants like </External_Content>, < / external_content >, or </EXTERNAL_CONTENT> are all detected and escaped, mirroring how a lenient HTML parser would treat the same literal string. The original casing and internal whitespace of the matched substring are preserved inside the escaped entities, so unwrap_external can restore it losslessly.
Attribute escaping¶
source, sender, and received_at values are escaped for &, <, >, and " before being written into the outer tag's attributes. A hostile value such as source="teams:<script>" cannot open a new tag or attribute inside the envelope's attribute region. Escaping order matters: & is replaced first so the entities' own & isn't double-escaped.
Feature flag¶
ENTRABOT_XPIA_WRAP_ENABLE (read via entrabot.config.get_config().xpia_wrap_enable) is a rollback switch, not an opt-in:
- Default is enabled (
true) — wrapping is on unless explicitly disabled. - Set to
false,0,no, oroff(case-insensitive) to disable wrapping. - When disabled,
wrap_externalbecomes the identity function and returnsbodyunchanged. No other code path or call site needs to change — a live rollback is a config/env change and a restart, not a code revert.
unwrap_external¶
Reverses wrap_external. Round-trips body byte-for-byte, including collision-escaped close tags, and recovers source, sender, and received_at from the envelope's attributes.
This function is for tests and audit inspection only — it is not called from any tool return path. Tool code only ever produces wrapped content; nothing in the production call path unwraps it.
Raises ValueError if the input is not a valid <external_content ...>...</external_content> envelope.
If received_at is present but fails to parse via datetime.fromisoformat(), unwrap_external returns received_at=None rather than raising — this is a best-effort, test/audit-only path, not a fail-loud production boundary.

The wrapped string is what a tool returns to the model. The body prompt instructs the model that everything between the tags is data to reason about, not an instruction to follow — wrap_external itself does not filter, rewrite, or evaluate the body's content in any way.

Confirmed unwrapped surfaces¶
read_a365_binary_file(src/entrabot/a365/odsp.py) returns binary content encoded (base64 by default) and does not pass it throughwrap_external— the text envelope does not apply to binary payloads.- Graph/Work IQ structured metadata fields (message
sender_id, emailsubject/recipients/headers, Wordcomments,rawprovider responses) are returned outside the envelope everywhere above, by design — filters, counts, and routing logic need to read them directly, and they are documented elsewhere as still attacker-influenced, just not primary injection surfaces.
Limitations¶
- Not cryptographic authenticity. There is no signature or MAC over the envelope or its contents; a party with access to the wrapping call site (i.e., entrabot's own tool code) can produce an envelope with any
source/senderit chooses. The guarantee is that content coming from Graph/Work IQ reaches the model already wrapped, not that the wrapped metadata is independently verifiable. - Not sanitization.
wrap_externaldoes not strip, rewrite, or reject any content inside the body. It only escapes the literal sequence that would let body text close the envelope early. - Not a guarantee against prompt injection succeeding. A sufficiently persuasive instruction inside the envelope can still influence a model's behavior; the envelope changes what the model is told about the text's trust level, it does not change what the model is capable of being convinced to do. Defense here is layered with the body prompt's instructions, not a substitute for them.
