Deploying DLP policies for AI interaction locations generates a steady stream of alerts as users interact with Microsoft 365 Copilot, agents, and third-party AI apps. Without a defined triage process, these alerts accumulate in the DLP alert management dashboard without investigation — policy matches go unreviewed, true positive exfiltration events are missed, and false positives erode confidence in the DLP program. Establishing a recurring triage process means assigning ownership for DLP alert review, defining review cadences, establishing escalation paths, and ensuring that the analysts performing triage have the permissions and context needed to make disposition decisions.

DLP alerts can be configured as single-event alerts for high-severity scenarios — such as a single email containing multiple credit card numbers sent to an external recipient — or as aggregate alerts that trigger when a threshold is reached over a time window. For AI workloads, both alert types are relevant: single-event alerts catch high-risk individual AI interactions, while aggregate alerts surface patterns where a user repeatedly shares sensitive content with AI apps over hours or days. The triage process must account for both types to ensure that high-severity events receive immediate attention while aggregate patterns are caught during periodic reviews. DLP alerts can be investigated in both the Microsoft Defender XDR dashboard and the Microsoft Purview portal; Microsoft recommends Defender XDR as the primary investigation surface because it correlates DLP alerts with signals from other security workloads.

Alerts from third-party AI sites where the organization has no data residency guarantees may warrant faster escalation than alerts from Microsoft 365 Copilot, where organizational data governance controls apply.
