1. Data ethics (10 minutes)

  • Discuss 6 principles of data ethics
  • Discuss anonymity in surveys
  • Discuss Personally Identifiable Information in surveys
  • Discuss how to avoid bias

2. Revise survey questions (5 minutes)

  • Encourage students to revise their questions in light of what they learned about data ethics.
  • Ask students to draft an explanation of how they will inform respondents about the purpose of your survey and how you will protect their PII.

3. Pair and share (10 minutes)

  • Ask students to swap survey questions with a classmate.
  • Encourage students to consult the Survey Rubric when reviewing each other's survey questions.
  • Each student should tell their partner what question you are trying to answer with your survey.
  • Ask students to review partners' questions and offer feedback on their survey.

4. Revise survey questions (5 minutes)

  • Encourage students to take classmate's feedback and revise survey questions.

5. Create survey (15 minutes)

  • Show students how to create a survey with Microsoft Forms:
    • Title
    • Description
    • Create questions
    • Branching
  • Instruct students to create all of their survey questions in their Form.

6. Homework

  • Students will finish creating their survey questions in their Form.
